I’ll be honest with you, when I first started out in window cleaning I didn’t have liability insurance, which was a pretty risky move. If something had gone wrong while I was washing windows I could have been financially ruined and my new San Diego Window Cleaning business would have been dead in the water.
Let’s face it starting out with limited cash I had to fake it until I made it. I was always hoping that my window cleaning customers would not ask me if I had insurance. Yet on those few instances where they did, I’d tell them I didn’t have insurance and would immediately mention that I had never had any accidents breaking anything, that a good window washer does not break windows. Surprisingly almost every one who heard this would say “ok!” But as my San Diego window cleaning business began to grow I started to run across large estates and commercial buildings that told me I would have to have liability insurance in order to clean windows for them and they wanted proof!
Eventually I broke down and bought insurance for window cleaning after winning a large contract. I had one month to come up with some proof so I spent a lot of time looking for insurance and secured some after two weeks.
Most insurance companies will charge close to a $1,000 dollars a year for a window cleaner. I was fortunate to get insurance for $600 a year. After you have had liability insurance for a year you can apply for Safco insurance through Costco which is only $500 a year. This is for a 2 million dollar coverage which is what most businesses will require of you.
Not only will you be able to secure higher paying window cleaning jobs with insurance but you will also enjoy having that feeling of security. Until I got insurance I was always overly worried about breaking something. Not that I don’t still take precautions, but now I can work with less stress on my mind knowing if something does happen I’m covered.
If you are like I was an unable to get insurance for window cleaning right away, be sure to get it as soon as possible. It will instill consumer confidence in your window cleaning business and signal to potential and current clientele that you are not a fly by night operation. And believe me I have heard the horror stories, which I will share with you in another article about professionalism.
